The SIOP Template is a great way to plan lessons with content and language objectives. Here is a sample lesson plan using the SIOP template. This lesson is intended for eighth to tenth grade Living Environment (Biology) students. The topic of this lesson is human population growth. The class that I originally taught this lesson to did not have any ELLs. The SIOP template allowed me to easily adapt this lesson to better support ELLs for future classes that may be more diverse. I changed my materials to include sentence stems and more visuals. I also decided to plan fore “pre-teaching”- in future lessons, I would provide readings to ELLs ahead of time so that they are better-equipped to participate in discussions. In activating background knowledge and generating curiosities about unit to come, I have students
discuss (with classmates) their predictions about how and why human populations have changed over time.I may decide to translate texts into the ELLs native language. Analyzing my lesson with a “language lens” made me realize that I had many opportunities to support language in a lesson that was initially focused only on science content.
